As Summer turns to Fall, bring your wardrobe with you!

Check out Global Grind for the top 5 trends for transitioning your wardrobe from Summer to Fall!

Summer to Fall

Here is my interpretation of their rules:
DO get a trendy jacket (or blazer or cardigan) in an earthy nuetral tone that you can throw over a summer dress and go.
DO learn to love scarves.
If you want to wear sandals...wear full length pants.
DON'T wear sandals with shorts or a skirt.
DON'T wear flip flops when it's cold outside.
DO invest in a new pair of leather ankle booties.
DON'T expose all your limbs, choose either you arms or legs.

Happy Fall Y'all!!

Honeymoooooon!

I am looking forward to our honeymoon so much!  After searching the internet for hours upon hours we discovered and decided on Cocobay Resort in Antigua!

10 reasons why we chose Cocobay:
  1. It's all-inclusive (food, drinks, kayaking, snorkeling)
  2. The accommodations are private bungalows
  3. Private plunge pool & ocean view (upgrade)
  4. The US Dept. of State says it's safe for us to go :)
  5. The primary language in Antigua is English
  6. No children allowed (we like kids, just might enjoy honeymoon w/out them)
  7. Amazing reviews about the staff
  8. Free shuttle from airport to resort
  9. 10% if you're on your honeymoon + welcome basket
  10. They have recently renovated facilities

One of the only down sides I can see so far about this small resort is they only have one restaurant, but I'm okay with that!  I have also read about how bad the mosquitos are if you don't have bug spray.  I feel that's Antigua in general, not specific to this resort.  Here's a shot of the mosquito nets over the beds:

Here is the view from the back porch/plunge pool...TO DIE FOR!

Brad & I are pretty active, so laying on the beach all day everyday is out of the question.  So far we have decided on these excursions:

1. Creole Cruises Antigua  It's the priciest of our excursions at $130 per person, but it's rated #1 of Antiguan excursions.  They pick you up via boat from the resort, take you on a cruise for the day, grill you a lobster lunch on an island and take you snorkeling.  Book online to save 10%.

2. Antigua Rain Forest Tours  There is an all day (5 hour) Zip Line & Beach Combo Tour, but we have decided to go with the Full Course Tour.  It includes 11 zip lines and a challenge course, and lasts approximately 2 1/2 hours.  That costs $99 per person, but you can also get 10% off if you book online.  If it rains, they will change your reservation date free of charge.

3. Shirley Heights I've read tons of great reviews about this place.  This is a restaurant/bar that has had a BBQ/party from 4 pm-10 pm every Sunday for 31 years.  From what I can tell it looks out over "Nelson's Dockyard", which is a national park in Antigua.  There may be a small cover charge to get in, but our main expense will be food and drinks.

Yesterday Brady mentioned he would like to get a couple's massage while we're there, so I'll be setting that up next.  Initially Brady wanted to go on a fishing expedition, but with my fear of disappearing at sea and the cost (minimum $600) of chartering a boat, we have decided to try these other things.  I'd much rather spend the $600 on 3 or 4 excursions!

Only one more month and we'll be enjoying Cocobay!

Would you rather relax on the beach, pack your day with adventure or do both over the week?
Where did you go on your honeymoon?

Black Bean & Corn Sooie Salsa

Being the picky eater that I am, I don't care for any vegetables, including salsa!  BUT, being the future wife of a man who eats everything, I LOVE to try new recipes for him all the time.

I first made this salsa for a graduation party back in 2009 and recently dug it out for our Razorback Tailgating (ya know, the one where we lost to Monroe?!!?).  This was a BIG hit at the tailgate.  We even had people from other tents coming to taste it.  I guess we can thank the salsa for our new friends Donald, Stacey & their baby Ryann!

Let me give some credit here: The original recipe was given to me by my aunt, Barbara Ballard, who received it from her friend Mary Klompus.

It's REALLY simple to make and won't go bad if it sits out a little while at a tailgate. The original recipe called for 1 can mexican flavored stewed tomatoes, 1 green pepper (chopped) and 1 small red onion (diced), but I tweaked it to 1 can mexican rotel to make it even simpler. Sometimes it's easier to have a recipe that doesn't require fresh ingredients, so it can be thrown together on short notice without having to go to the store. Also, without the fresh ingredients it keeps a little longer.

1 can black beans, drained (& rinsed if you don't want your salsa to look dark)
1 can whole kernel corn, drained
I can mexican rotel
6-8 shakes red wine vinegar
1 small bottle red or blush wine vinegarette dressing

Tip:  Add a little at a time of the dressing until salsa reaches consistency you prefer, the whole bottle may make it too runny.  I just use half a bottle!

The blush wine vinegarette was tricky for
me to find because it has a strawberry
on it.  Here's a picture of the kind I use.

Make sure to get the "Mexican Lime & Cilantro" Rotel.  Go ahead and get two, since you'll have enough dressing for two recipes.  Do the same for black beans and corn.  I drain a little juice off this, but I don't know that it makes a difference!

Do you have a favorite recipe I can test on Brad?

Mystery Weekend!

This weekend is my last big hoorah with my girls in Dallas...AKA my Bachelorette Party!
I have no idea what's on the schedule, but I'm so excited to catch up with everyone! I was told to pack a swimsuit, outfit for night and outfit for brunch. I'll post later to show you what I picked!
Since I'm planning the wedding on a semi-tight budget I am doing a lot of things myself! I am taking some stuff along to Dallas for the girls to help me make pennant banners!
So far I have tan/brown burlap, cream muslin & twine. I still need to get paint to write the letters on some banners and lace to trim out some burlap pennants.
Here are a few example pics of what I'm thinking:

The pink burlap is to DIE for! Anyone know where to find that? It would be precious on the dessert table!

I will post pics & tutorial of all the different banners we do!

Have you made a banner like this before? Do you have any tips for me?

Bridal Shower

A group of my mom's sweet friends hosted a lovely shower for me on August 26th.  The shower was at Monica Shults' home, which was decorated beautifully as usual!  Nan Clem created the most precious invitations displaying cowboy boots underneath a wedding dress.

Hostesses L-R:  Melinda French, Penny Smothers, Monica Shults, Nan Clem, Karen Henley, Joyce Whitfield, Sherry Fisher, Jann Hubbard (not pictured)

Wonderful snacks and refreshing lemonade were offered to guests!  The hostesses gift to the bride and groom were a selection kitchen knifes.  Brad was especially excited about this as choosing them was his main contribution when registering for gifts!

L-R: Barbara Ballard (my aunt), Sarah, Janice Carhart (my mom)

In fitting with the rustic theme, I donned a pair of cropped cowboy boots myself!  It's so much fun to get new outfits for special occasions like this,  I'm not sure if I'll wear this shiny dress again, but it was perfect for this shower!
  • Boots:  Ross Dress for Less several years ago
  • Dress:  Ross Dress for Less $7.99
  • Earrings: TJ Maxx $10
This was such a beautiful shower!  Thanks to Kristin Shults for writing a list for me for thank you notes!  I wish I had more pictures of this shower, but my camera was being difficult!

It sure felt like fall when I took the dogs out this morning and was pretty chilly! I think it's time for a new coat.  This gorgeous wool herringbone coat by Ivanka Trump is on sale today for only $54.99, which is almost half price.  With free shipping this is a steal!  This is definitely a contender!

This would be great dressed up with your LBD, tights and boots, paired with red cords for the next Razorback game or even daily to the office.

Razorback Couple's Party

Brad's sister Ali and Ross welcomed us into their home and put together a great party with Holly, Mark and Anna.  The food was amazing, drinks were plentiful and company was perfect!

Check out this spread!  I grabbed the pics courtesy of Ali's Blog Project Game Day.  (Be sure to check out PGD for the latest on Razorback tailgating!)

These were truly the BEST cupcakes I have ever had.  Holly made them and everyone raved about them.  She and Ali are teaming up to make them for the wedding and I am beyond thrilled!

I'm really looking forward to marrying this guy!  We received so much fun Razorback stuff at the party and had fun catching up with friends.  Wish I would have taken more pictures of everyone there!

Kitchen & Garden Shower July 21, 2012

I received so many compliments on this dress at the shower and again when I wore it out to dinner.  It looks like it came straight from Anthropologie.  Paired with nude heels, bright red polish and a loose braid it provided that vintage feel that I was going for.  I will add a better shot of the shoes later!

  • Dress:  Ross Dress for Less $9.99
  • Shoes:  Ross Dress for Less $16.99
  • Earrings: TJ Maxx on sale $10
When I lived in Texas I typically went to Ross just for shoes and home decorator stuff.  Since getting a Ross Store here in Hot Springs, I have been obsessed!

I'm thinking of pairing this dress with either metallic or leather flat sandals for our honeymoon.  This fall it will be precious with tights and a cardigan.  I love buying versatile pieces that take you from one season to the next!

What's your most versatile piece?

Kitchen & Garden Party

The Red Oak Fillin Station served as a perfect backdrop for this Kitchen & Garden Party.

Brad's aunt Sandy selected this venue with our vintage rustic wedding theme in mind.

Guests enjoyed flavored tea in mason jars and warm cobbler topped with vanilla ice cream reminiscent of a true Ice Cream Social.

The hostesses gave a beautiful Cynthia Rowley watering can with garden tools. It was filled with fresh flowers from Texas and fresh rosemary from Pam's garden that filled the room with a wonderful aroma. There was also a cardinal hanging in the arrangement, a sweet memento of Brad's grandmother Willa.

Although this is not the best picture of me, it is one of my favorites from the shower!  My sister Rachel is sitting next to me (She has been married for seven years and is expecting a little boy in December).  Refrigerator dishes are these amazing vintage glass dishes that sometimes came inside your new fridge back in the day.  I have wanted a set of these forever. Apparently Rachel did too :)  Thanks so much to my Mammaw, I will treasure these always!

Showered With Love

The wedding season started strong in July with our first shower!  My uncle Jimmy, aunt Beverly and cousins Jenny and Bethany hosted a wonderful shower for us out on their farm.

L-R: Brad, me, Jenny, Beverly (holding Caroline) & Bethany

I love that whenever my family throws a shower it always includes the men of the family and is centered around a meal!  I could feel the love that went into preparing the meal for this shower!  I'm sure the entire spread was apetizing, but as usual I honed in on the meat and bread!  Jimmy grilled delicious chicken and Beverly made homemade biscuits!

My Perfect Meal: chicken, biscuit, BBQ sauce & pink lemonade

Yummy Dessert

Jenny did such a wonderful job on the decorations!  She's one of the few people I know that actually turns her pins into reality!  The tissue paper flowers were a big hit with the little girls!

If only we had 30 harvest tables for the wedding reception!

Adorable Kids Table

Beverly covered the top in paper so the kids can color directly on the table.  Such a smart idea!  There were also some Cinderella coloring pages available.  My second cousin Cody made Brad and I the cutest "happy birthday" sign at the shower :)

We received so many great things to start our home together.  Traditionally in our family our grandmother gives a vintage quilt to the engaged couple.  I love this tradition and look forward to keeping this quilt in our family for years to come!!

One of the things that attracted me to Brad was the importance he places on family!  I am so excited Brad is now a part of my family.  Here is a picture of most of my cousins (missed you Tim & Sarah B.) and our growing families!

This was the perfect way to start off our wedding season.  We are so blessed to have such a loving family!

DIY Photo Canvas...yes please!

For Valentine's Day I asked for the tools and supplies to update a pair of circa 1970 nightstands into chic mirrored nightstands (look for that tutorial in the future).  However, that is more like a weekend project so last night we decided to make a little artwork for our home :)

We had our engagement pictures taken a while back at a family farm and got them back just in time for Valentine's Day thanks to our amazing photographer Jenny Benson.  I had planned to make this photo canvas for Brady for a little v-day present, but the pictures took too long to download so we ended up making it together when Brady got back in town from work- which turned out to be much better!

So here is how it went down:

1.  Even thought I bought it on sale at TJ Maxx about five years ago for $29.99, it was getting super boring to me, plus our recently retired Captain drew cows and birds on it, I'm considering this as free since it was going to the donate pile otherwise.  Oh it's 24" X 36".

2.  I rolled a fresh coat of paint onto the canvas--INCLUDING the sides.  After letting it dry between coats I ended up doing 3 coats to cover up the painting below.  I don't think that many coats would be necessary if starting with a blank canvas.
I used Sherwin Williams "Mindful Grey" for my canvas.  I had this on hand because it was a color sample I tried for the dining room, but Brady outvoted me on that one.  BTW I love these skinny little rollers because they are so easy to wash out and reuse.  They are a little pricier than the normal rollers, but I saw them super cheap at our Habitat for Humanity Restore recently.

3.  I contacted our local Office Depot, because I was having trouble uploading and ordering reprints through their website.  They were very helpful and just gave me their copy center e-mail address to send the pictures straight to with instructions for them on what you want.  Since my canvas is 24"X36" we ordered the print in the same size.  We asked it to be printed in black and white on basic paper.  I have read several blogs and they say to request an "Engineered Print", but at Office Depot that cost $1.67 a square foot, and just printing it on regular paper only cost $2.98 TOTAL!!
Here is a close up shot to show the quality of the photo enlargement (pretty dang good if you ask me)

4.  We did a "dry run" to make sure that it fit on the canvas and it ended up being about a 1/4" too tall.  We decided to line the paper up with the bottom of the canvas and work our way up, leaving the extra paper at the top.  There are numerous types of spray adhesive at Wal-Mart, I went with this one because it was the cheapest.  Don't be fooled by the $16 spray glue with the elmer's glue, got this same size bottle for $5 located next to the Mod Podge.

While Brady held the paper into place on the canvas, I pulled back the bottom 5-6" and applied spray adhesive to the canvas.  (This pic reminds me that I need to start tanning for the wedding sooner than later!)
I went pretty light on the adhesive because I didn't know how it would effect the ink through the paper, but I think I could have used more, especially on the edges.  Press the paper down onto the canvas and make sure to smooth out any air bubbles.

4.  Apply spray adhesive to the rest of the of the canvas and smooth the print down.  Wait about a minute after you spray before adhering the paper.  This is on the directions on the adhesive can.  I guess it gives it time to get tacky??

5.  Trim off the excess paper along the top, as close as you can so that it doesn't hang over the edge of the canvas.

6.  I don't know what happened to the picture for the next step, but I will explain without the picture.  Using a paint brush and the same paint that you used to paint the canvas, "dab" the paint around the perimeter of the canvas, covering the white edge made from the printer.  I used a brush that was 1" wide and only about 1/4" thick.  I suggest going over it multiple times with very little paint on your brush just until the white is all covered, to avoid globs of paint warping the paper.  Here is a picture with the completed border, that blends really well with the sides of the canvas.

7.  I did some blog researchin' on this photo canvas project before going at it, and the biggest mistake people said they made was mod podge ruining the photo by smearing the ink.  Perfect solution...SPRAY Mod Podge!!  They have it in both matte and gloss, but I decided to go with the matte.  This stuff runs a little under $6 a can.
We applied VERY light coats because we didn't want to mess up our project on the last step. We ended up applying three coats, letting it dry about 10 minutes between coats. I'll be honest that you can't really see a difference after this step, but you can feel the difference. I'm guessing there would have been a bigger change if I had chosen the glossy version. Regardless, our print has been protected with an acrylic sealer :)

Done and Done....

Don't forget to put the date on the back and who you made it with!  All in all this project cost us less than $15 and it made for a fun Valentine's Day project.  Also I have tons of leftover spray adhesive and mod podge for future projects.  You could also use wood or foam or even cardboard to make a faux photo canvas, just make sure to paint the sides of your material.

I hope this tutorial was easy to understand, because the project was super easy.  The hardest part was making ourselves wait for things to dry before jumpipng to the next step :)

Please comment if you have any questions or need me to clarify something.  If you make one be sure to post a picture for everyone to see.  Check back after the weekend to see how the mirrored nightstands turn out!
